In the united states type o positive is the most common blood type.

O blood type universal donor. Type o blood is the only type of blood group that does not have an antigen. Universal donors are those with an o negative blood type. A universal donor blood type means that supposedly anyone who has this type of blood can donate to anyone else regardless of blood type.

This is because type o negative is the universal donor and type o positive is the most common blood type. The blood type that is the universal donor is type o negative. The least common blood types are type b negative and type ab negative.

Blood group types are based on proteins called antigens that are present on red blood cells. Type o is routinely in short supply and in high demand by hospitals both because it is the most common blood type and because type o negative blood is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions and for immune deficient infants. For emergency transfusions blood group type o negative blood is the variety of blood that has the lowest risk of causing serious reactions for most people who receive it.

Hence a person with blood type o rhesus negative can donate his blood to everyone with all types of blood. But as it consists of antibodies for a and b antigens the person with o blood group can receive. This means that people with blood types a b and ab have no antibodies to reject type o.

Blood group o can be given to any person having any blood type as it does not contain antigens for a and b for agglutination to occur with either of the antibodies in the other blood types. Blood type o is the universal donor because it has no antigens on its rbc membranes. This unique fact makes this type of blood o have a smaller risk to cause reactions to blood transfusions.

Because of this it s sometimes called the universal blood donor type. O negative blood can be used in transfusions for any blood type. Blood type ab is the universal recipient because it contains no antibodies and therefore will not reject any of the other blood types regardless of its antigens.

Broken down by race type o positive s prevalence is 37 among caucasians 47 among african.
